Katy B Review Camden Koko London 23/05/11

Katy B played the Camden Koko in London on 23rd May 2011
Anyone about to go onstage at their first headline show in their home town is undoubtedly going to be somewhat nervous but as Katy B ran out on stage it was hard to find any signs of apprehension.
With a full band on stage with her (a welcome addition to the usually solitary performance of a dub step artist) Katy B instantly took hold of the sold out venue and any doubts as to her ability to fill every inch of the stage were blown away within seconds.
Although Katy B is thought of as just a dub step artist (a very easy assumption to make from her casual street style of a gold baseball jackets and jeans) the range of genres she encompasses in her set includes salsa, soul, hip hop and drum ‘n’ bass, making this girl very hard to pigeon hole into just one category. This style of performance meant that the gig was always kept fresh and held the audience’s attention throughout.
A highlight for everyone was Katy’s performance of ‘Lights On’, a track the audience had obviously been waiting for as the whole room seemed to erupt as she sang the opening line. This was followed up by Katy introducing her newest single ‘Easy Please Me’ which was well received by her enthused fans.
My only after thought to what was otherwise an exciting debut London show was the sporadic appearances from the MC, who seemed to have been sent out on stage to ensure the energy didn’t drop between songs. – Possibly revealing a glimpse of Katy’s inexperience.
Being the latest graduate from The Brit School Katy has to live up to the likes of Jessie J, Kate Nash, Katie Melua and of course Adele and after showcasing her flawless vocals and showbiz credentials I think it’s safe to say we haven’t seen the last of this young Peckham Lass!
