Mercury puts an end to single CD and Vinyls

UK record label Mercury has today announced they will no longer be making CD singles and Vinyl’s. The label company home to Arcade Fire, U2, The Killers, Pixie Lott and many more said they had made a loss on singles in 2010 and would now only produce singles for “rare exceptions”.
Even though individual track sales have risen since 2006, physical singles now make up less than 1% of weekly sales, as downloads become more popular.
However some CD/Vinyls will still be available for the rare occasion, such as X factors Christmas single, as these still sell a large amount of physical single copies, but it does appear that the Vinyl is disappearing slowly as they saw a drop of 82% in 4 years.
A spokesperson for Mercury said “For the past couple of years we have released physical singles only when there is demand.”
“With physical formats now accounting for just over 1% of the overall singles market we are being more cautious.
“That said, physical singles are not disappearing and we will still release them when there is a demand.”
Comic reliefs single by The Wanted was an exception to the rule, and they will keep making these so long as there is a damand.
