1234 Festival 2011 Preview
The 1234 Festival takes place on Saturday 9th July 2011 “god i hate hipsters but i fucking love their music” – From where I’m sitting, this appears to be the new consensus of internet critics speculating on the sounds of supposedly hip and unique looking individuals who have in fact wandered blindly in to the realms of cliché.
By ‘internet critics’ I am of course referring to those who add empty conjecture to the likes of YouTube, NME.com and the Guardian’s CIF pages, i.e. the type you wouldn’t even shake hands with. But such remarks, like the one above for instance, taken from a live YouTube video of Beach Fossils at SXSW, do make a point.
Since 2007, there has been no better showcase for so-called “hipster fag” music in Britain than the 1234 Festival, located in Shoreditch Park, east London. The line-up has always been unbearably ahead of the curve; its first year saw a relatively low-key set from Florence + The Machine whilst 2010 brought in something of a coach party of new ‘noise-wave’ talent (e.g. Dum Dum Girls, The Tamborines, Vivian Girls, S.C.U.M, Wavves).
This year continues to bring the noise with the likes of Electricity In Our Homes, The History of Apple Pie, The Chapman Family and The Horror’s new allies Toy, as well as legendary punk-poetry figure Lydia Lunch, alt. rock mentalists Black Lips and Charlatans frontman Tim Burgess.
